FAQ

  • 1. What is your Mission Statement?

Rehoboth Beach Dykes on Bikes® Women’s Motorcycle Contingent is rooted in the legacy of the original San Francisco Chapter, advancing visibility, pride, and solidarity among lesbian + queer women motorcyclists and allies while building a bold, inclusive community in and around Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Our mission is to empower and unite lesbian + queer women motorcyclists, LGBTQ+ and women’s causes through philanthropy, Rides, supporting local communities, PRIDE events, and education.

  • 2. Can only lesbians join?

We are lesbian + queer woman-centric, not exclusive.

We welcome and include all genders who share our values: Riders, Passengers, non-riders, and volunteers.

YES, Men be a DYKE too!

Officer positions will be held by lesbian + queer women and women allies.

  • 3. When did you become a Chapter?

We were officially voted in as a Chapter of the San Francisco Dykes on Bikes® Women’s Motorcycle Contingent in May 2025, joining over 20+ chapters around the world!

We are in the process of registering as a non-profit organization.

  • 4. Isn't DYKE offensive?

The word dyke originated in the 1920s as a derogatory slur aimed at masculine, butch, or androgynous-presenting women and girls. While some individuals may still use the term with harmful intent, its meaning and use have evolved significantly over time.

Many within the lesbian community have since reclaimed the term dyke as a source of pride—embracing it as a symbol of strength, assertiveness, and resilience. What was once meant to wound has become, for many, a badge of courage and authenticity.

The reclamation of the term “dyke” began in 1969 as people in the gay community began to march in the streets to demand civil rights. During this time, “dyke” referred to a woman committed to revolution!

In 2017, the Supreme Court overturned the Lanham Act, one of the most important Freedom of Expression legal cases. DOB proudly gained their Trademark, reclaimed the once “disparaging word” for empowerment, and solidified our right to self-refer as a "dyke".

  • 5. Are you a Gang?

We liked Sons of Anarchy too, but… No, we are not a club or biker gang.

A Motorcycle Club (not us) is a group that forms a community. MC, RC, MAs, etc all have different communities and rules.

We are a WMC: Women’s Motorcycle Contingent, assembled together for a particular purpose - you can read more in our Mission Statement.

We hold a dual role as a WMC and a nonprofit organization (in progress) committed to uplifting LGBTQ+ and women’s voices through rides, pride, philanthropy, and education. Our mission is deeply rooted in love, justice, and the power of showing up—loud, proud, and on two wheels.
